What's Happening?
In the heart of Tigray, Ethiopia, a devastating crisis unfolds, disproportionately affecting its resilient women. The collision of a two-year-long war, severe drought, and a looming famine compounds their struggles, adding layers of vulnerability to an already dire situation
The conflict, erupting in November 2020, has left Tigrayan women grappling with the profound consequences. Over 1.4 million people, many of them women, faced forced displacement. The economic fallout—looted factories, disrupted tourism, and a siege halting trade—plunged women into extreme poverty, amplifying the challenges they face.

The crisis has resulted in homelessness, leaving Tigrayan women, including elderly ones, without shelter. Displaced from their homes and with limited resources, these women are forced to endure the harsh conditions of living on the streets. The vulnerability of elderly women is particularly pronounced, facing added challenges in securing basic necessities and protection from the elements.

As if the burdens weren't enough, the failure of rains intensifies the crisis. Reports of hundreds of children, many born to Tigrayan women, succumbing to starvation trickle in from remote areas. The UN estimates that over 20 million Ethiopians urgently need food aid, with Tigray facing an especially alarming situation. Tigrayan women, already grappling with loss, displacement, and economic ruin, are at the forefront of this unfolding catastrophe.

Tigrayan women bear the brunt of extensive theft of crucial food aid. Aid organizations, such as USAid and the UN World Food Programme, suspended aid to overhaul a system marred by corruption. Slow progress and a lack of urgency have hindered swift assistance. The Ethiopian government's denial of imminent famine exacerbates the suffering for Tigrayan women, delaying vital aid.

As Tigrayan women navigate this multifaceted crisis, an urgent international intervention is imperative. Swift and coordinated efforts are needed to alleviate their suffering, provide aid, and restore hope. The echoes of past famines serve as a stark reminder, underscoring the immediate action required to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe. Time is of the essence in securing a brighter and more resilient future for the women of Tigray.
